I have been drawing pictures for as long as I can remember, and although I started out with crayons, markers and chunks of charcoal from the fireplace, most of my recent work is done in gouache, watercolors and acrylics.

I studied biology as an undergraduate and have worked in wildlife husbandry and veterinary medicine, so the living world holds a special place in my heart. I am drawn to natural themes such as plants, wildlife and landscapes. All of the artwork in my online gallery is inspired by nature – one of my greatest sources of inspiration.

We hope you’ve had a great start to 2012, we are looking forward to seeing new art & creative projects this year!

One of our goals for 2012, is to enrich our online community with tips and resources for developing artists. We’ve started with www.mobileartlounge.com/artists

Our first blog series is dedicated to helping artists get a good start on building a marketing plan. We will provide helpful content, links from our favorite sources, activity downloads, etc. Please feel free to comment on any post in the series to share your ideas and experiences! The more input everyone provides, the more valuable our artist community becomes.

We also hope to continue building a creative online community for artists, art collectors, and enthusiasts. Before we launch our next exhibit, we will present works by Featured Artists on the Mobile Art Lounge home page. Featured Artists will be chosen from current Mobile Art Lounge artists as well as new submissions.

Join our growing online community now!
“My paintings could be described as visionary abstracts.
They are spontaneous explorations into what is currently fascinating me. Sometimes that is a concept: the poetics of breath, connection, chaos, yearning, expansion, love, divinity. Sometimes it’s an image: trees, flowers, circles, hearts, the written word.
I like to see what happens in the moment.”

[ artist's statement ]

Gina Dunn’s work is a combination of truth; a passion that you can see yourself in. Her compositions are abundant with nature and human touch, constantly revealing a secret. The strokes of earthy tones and energetic symbols in her abstract works always tell a story. Each work in its own way addresses the vulnerability that stems from being at the mercy of powers greater than us but also from the knowledge that life is precious and beautiful.

Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Gina Marie Dunn has lived in Dallas much of her life. She attended Ursuline Academy and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Loyola University New Orleans with B.A. in Communications and a Minor in Studio Arts.

Gina Dunn is currently the Texas Art Director for Origin Magazine and an Educator at the Dallas Museum of Art and Art Stop.

Her work has been displayed at Cameron Gallery, Rising Gallery, The Latino Cultural Center, LuminArte Gallery and others throughout Texas and the Southwest. Her work is featured in both private and commercial collections and publications, nationally and internationally. She was recently commissioned by the Omni Hotel Dallas Convention Center to create 25 original works.

Gina is a wife and mother of three, has fun making art every day, and believes it is never too early to instill a love of the arts in children. She is also an active community advocate and serves on various local philanthropic committees by donating her time and talent

My works are a juxtaposition of the existing relationships between fashion and nature. Not merely just fashion illustrations. I love to capture how a person can create different atmospheres through the garments they wear. It is almost like a second skin that is as natural and essential as nature. I like to interpret these in forms of characters where the colors I use express the pleasant elements of nature through soft muted colors in a light-hearted way.

This lesson explores Landscape Art, with a review of the horizon line and creating depth.

This lesson goes with the exhibit Landscapes

Landscape Art depicts the main subject as a section, expanse, or wide view of natural scenery.

ART VOCABULARY

Foreground, Middleground, and Background – portions of a landscape composition from nearest to and farthest from the viewer.

Horizon Line – a line across the landscape that represents eye level (often where the land meets the sky); its placement determines where we seem to be looking from – a high place, or close to the ground. Sometimes the line itself is not visible because it is obscured by objects in the landscape like hills, trees, buildings, etc.

OBSERVE
(…………. = horizon line)

Placing the horizon line high in the composition accents the foreground and enhances the sense of distance.

Dividing a landscape in half by placing the horizon line across the middle of the composition is often considered breaking a rule of design, but it can work well for featuring mirror reflections in pond and lake scenes, or showing large mountain ranges with elaborate foregrounds.

A horizon line placed low in the composition features little foreground and concentrates on the vastness of the sky. Low horizons are effective for capturing dramatic skies, colorful sunsets, illuminated clouds, etc.

CONSIDER THIS: 6 tips for creating depth & distance in a landscape
An excerpt from Empty Easel – www.emptyeasel.com

1. Overlap various elements within your composition so that some are forced forward or backward in the scene.
2. Use less detail, texture, and definition when painting objects in the mid-ground and background of the landscape.
3. Paint with lighter values and less contrast for distant elements.
4. Use cooler colors to push elements farther into the background.
5. Use warmer, darker colors to bring elements forward into the foreground.
6. As elements recede in the distance, paint them at a much smaller scale than objects in the foreground.

Take a look at this landscape oil painting by Paul Cézanne for these examples:
Paul Cézanne, Mont Sainte-Victoire, 1882-1885, Metropolitan Museum of Art. Post-Impressionism

- The horizon line is just above center, creating more emphasis on the foreground and middle ground.
- The trees in the foreground overlap the architecture and mountains behind them, creating a sense that these elements are far into the distance.
- The bridge, houses and mountains in the middle and background are painted in less detail, lighter values and have little contrast.
- The trees in the foreground are painted in darker values and have more texture than the elements behind them.
- The trees and rooftop in the foreground are much larger than the elements behind them.

FUN FACTS: Related -scapes
Skyscapes or Cloudscapes – depictions of clouds, weatherforms, and atmospheric conditions
Moonscapes – shows the landscape of a moon
Seascapes – depict oceans or beaches
Cityscapes/townscapes – depict cities (urban landscapes)
Hardscapes – paved over areas; streets and sidewalks, business complexes, housing developments, and industrial areas

ACTIVITY
Using your medium of choice, create your own landscape art. Think about the placement of the horizon line in your composition. Use detail, overlapping elements, contrast, etc to create a sense of depth.

Share your landscapes with us! Post a link in the comments section of this page, or email them to us!

“I am an Artist, but without my hands, pencil, pen, or brush, I am lost.”

About the Artist

Since 2006, I have been boldly developing my skills as an oil painter. I’ve had 2 pieces that sold at the Frederic C. Hamilton Family Art Gallery in the Denver Children’s Hospital, through the Art for Life program. I have also competed several commissioned pieces, all incorporating many different subjects. Along with many of my oil pieces, my graphite work has also been featured in on-line galleries and collections via DeviantArt.com. As of 2011, I have been awarded Best in Show, First place, and honorable mention awards in several shows.

[ artist's statement ]

“Idealism. Reality. Humanity. Spirituality.”

I am drawn to using bold primary colors in my art, inspired by the stained glass windows of old cathedrals, which tell stories to the masses through beautiful images. However, my stories are about myself and people I know, and may not always be as idealistic as they appear. I see each panel as a different part of a life story, often derived from my own experiences, both as a child and as an adult.

Family, Home and Relationships are strong themes in my work. I try to bring to light the responsibility, privilege, struggle and sanctity of relationships. Most of my story is told with paint, but I also include collage and found objects. By layering text, images and paint, I am able to visually “write” the stories of my life.

About the Artist

Misty Oliver-Foster is a Texas artist who works in acrylics, collage and mixed media. Her paintings have been featured in numerous solo and group shows, and she has a growing group of collectors all over the country.

An only child, she spent many hours of her childhood drawing, painting and performing for family and friends in her small hometown. Misty later received a BFA from the University of North Texas. She worked for six years as a high school art instructor, and she attributes those years as an important development stage for her as an artist. During those years, she was able to travel in Europe and the US, which compelled her to pursue her dream of being a working artist.

Misty has a studio at her home in Frisco, Texas.
